7 ways to save money on gas

Tow truck companies and Bay Area roadside assistance professionals are busier than ever, bringing gas to those who’ve run out on our area's highways and byways. We get it. High gas prices are draining household funds, so people are doing bare minimum fill-ups to save money on gas. Unfortunately, it’s leading to an uptick in service calls as low tanks run out before clients make it to the next station.

Use Less And Save Money On Gas With These 7 Simple Tips

While gas-saving apps and local deals may stretch gas dollars a bit further, by and large, the best way to save money on gas is to reduce fuel consumption as much as possible.

Start carpooling and ridesharing

This is a good time to ask around and see if any colleagues or neighbors work in the same general vicinity as you. By carpooling and ridesharing, gas funds stretch exponentially further. Plus, access to the carpool lane typically means a faster trip to and from work.

Use a smartphone app

While gas stations are somewhat limited in how much they can slash gas prices, some stations sell their gas for pennies less per gallon. These small savings add up over time, especially if you have a longer-than-average commute. Some of the best-rated gas-saving apps are:

  1. GasBuddy
  2. Gas Guru
  3. Waze
  4. Dash
  5. MapQuest Gas Prices

Most are available on both iOS and Android devices. Many online maps and route planning options also offer information about “gas prices near me,” allowing drivers to choose where to stop.

Check out price differences between states

If you’re planning an interstate road trip, do some research on states and gas prices. For example, Oregon and Nevada have much lower gas prices than California. If you’re heading to or passing through either of those states, it makes sense to fill up before leaving a state with cheaper gas prices.

Skip premium fuel for now

Contrary to what fuel manufacturers would have you believe, there is zero to very minimal benefit to using higher-octane gas in most cars. As a major car insurer, Geico, states “If your car does not recommend premium, you aren’t doing your vehicle any favors by getting it…In most cases, higher octane does not improve MPG…”

Yes, higher-octane fuel may minimally improve overall performance, but not in a way that justifies the extra expense for the typical driver. For now, save that extra money and treat your car when fuel prices go back down.

Consider paying with cash

Many gas stations charge more for using a debit or credit card, passing the credit card company fees on to the consumer. Look for signage or pop in and speak to the gas station attendant to learn more about their billing policies. Some stations charge as much as $.10 to $.20 cents less per gallon for cash-paying customers. That’s a huge saving for drivers fueling up multiple times per week.

Join a gas rewards program to save money on gas

You’ve seen those advertisements for gas rewards year after year. They’re tempting, but not necessarily the best option if you use different gas stations along your travels. Now, however, it may be wise to study the different rewards programs out there and compare savings potential. Each station has different rules and regulations, so make sure to read the fine print to make accurate comparisons.

Some grocery stores such as Ralph’s, Safeways, and Food For Less partner with gas station chains to offer gas rewards through dollars spent shopping. See if your local supermarket offers that type of deal. Finally, the GasBuddy app referenced above offers up to .$25/cents per gallon in savings if you pay for gas through their app, although some station exclusions apply.

Finally, see which of your current credit cards offer point rewards for gas expenditures. Rather than putting those funds back into flights or to catch new gadgets, it’s probably better to trade them in for cash you can put back into your tank.

Honor vehicle engine and tire maintenance recommendations

Your vehicle’s fuel efficiency is proportionally related to the condition of its engine and tires. Keep up on the manufacturer’s recommended engine maintenance service, oil changes, and tire maintenance. These are all foundations for getting the best fuel efficiency and saving money on gas.
